The conversation around Global Capability Centres is increasingly shifting beyond questions of where to build, how to hire and what technology to deploy. A more fundamental question is emerging: What are the decisions that truly determine what a GCC will become?
Recently, we asked whether organizations building a GCC today would prioritize Talent, AI, Governance, Operating Model or Process Architecture. The responses revealed very different perspectives. One view was that the operating model comes first because it determines how talent flows, what AI can automate, and how governance structures hold together.
Another argued that talent is the foundation but retention is the real test. A GCC can hire the right people and still struggle if the work lacks ownership, meaning or a visible path for growth.
A third perspective highlighted culture, nothing that technology and frameworks can only take a GCC so far if the India organization remains operationally connected but strategically disconnected from the enterprise.
Perhaps the real issue is that these decisions are interconnected and the critical question becomes: Which decision creates the conditions for the others to succeed? This is where our thinking is heading next.
We want your perspective
If you have built, led, transformed or advised a GCC, we would like to know your view. Which decision has the greatest influence on what a GCC ultimately becomes? Is it the operating model, the work it owns, process architecture, talent, technology and AI, governance or something else?
If you’re looking to build a GCC and want to learn more, explore this.
